3/20/19 — Hey Mama! Before you keep reading, I wanted to pop in and tell you that I have a new FREEBIE that is pretty incredible. If you are struggling to keep up, if you want to be more productive, or if you are feeling stuck in a rut, grab my SAHM schedule! This is the exact schedule that I follow to enjoy my life rather than cleaning up after it-all preloaded into a Trello board for your convenience! Grab it here!

You hear it. It starts honking in your dreams. It’s the sound that you dread every time you wake up in the middle of the night. Yep, your alarm clock is going off and it’s time to drag yourself out of bed. Ugh.

Trust me, I have totally been there! For about three years straight. My kids are not what you would call great sleepers. However, I made the decision to not allow being tired to keep me from smashing my goals!

If you are longing to accomplish more in a day-whether that means to accomplish more around the house, make more memories, or start dabbling in business-then keep reading.

Making The Decision To Overcome Fatigue as a SAHM

Being a great mom was and is my number one priority, but I found that I needed something outside of my home life. Living in the trenches without anything to focus on besides my never-ending task list was hurting me emotionally. I needed something that would be motivating!

However, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with more than I already did. But guess what? I’m making it work, and you can too!

I might not have the solution to every problem that steals your energy. I can’t do your chores or help you change diapers twenty times a day. But I can give you a few tips on how to push through the fatigue.

I can give you a bit of advice on how to overcome your exhaustion, and make the most of the time that you do have. And whether or not you want to admit it, that time is likely first thing in the morning. So how can you wake up and get. stuff. done? Here is what works for me.

Try Every Method, and Make a Commitment To Yourself

I really want you to create a tailored routine that is perfect for your strengths and tendencies so that you can find the most success possible. However, I can only tell you what has worked best for me. There are a few things that I have learned to make all the difference.

First of all, I should tell you that I am not a morning person. These suggestions I will be making are definitely not things that I did naturally. They aren’t even suggestions I would have taken seriously before I decided to commit 100% to my blog! Because I made that commitment to myself, I tried them regardless of how hokey they felt. I have to tell you, I was surprised!

These nutty woo-woo things actually work! Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Pay attention to what makes a difference for you, but give everything a shot regardless of how pointless or weird it may seem. You will never know what works until you try it!

Start By Setting Goals

Let’s start at the very beginning. The first step to reaching any kind of goal is to prioritize. Take a minute to brain dump everything that you want to see happen in the next year. When you start thinking of all of the things that you want, you might find that there is a whole list. Choose the three most important items. I like to choose goals in each part of my life: business, family, and home.

There are a few different ways to go about setting goals. Regardless of which method you follow, the only way you can reach them is by sitting down and identifying them first so do not skip this step!

So how does this tie into waking up in the morning? Well, when you set goals and create a plan to reach them suddenly there is a spike in motivation.

You have something to work towards. You have a way to measure all of the little things that you do in a day.

It won’t feel like you’re just spinning your wheels anymore. You will be able to know exactly what’s getting you closer to what you want, and what is getting in your way.

That motivation is the first step to waking up in the morning because it will make you excited about your future!

Get Physical

The second strategy that will help you get out of bed is a bit more direct. Put your alarm clock out of reach. Make a commitment to yourself that when you get out of bed, you will not lie down again. Follow through with it! Regardless of how tired you are-I don’t even care if your eyes are open-keep yourself standing.

After you drag yourself out of bed, do not sit down for at least fifteen minutes. Not allowing yourself to sit down means that you will need to fill this time with something productive.

I highly recommend drinking as much water as you can stomach, and heading outside for a minute.

Staying hydrated helps your body function at it’s best, and doing something cold jolts your brain into consciousness! By the end of fifteen minutes, your grogginess should be completely gone.

I challenge you to give this one a shot. Take a cold shower, workout for twenty minutes, go outside in the winter-time. Just do something cold!

That leads to the third tip to help you have a productive morning-create a goal-oriented morning routine.

Why You Need An Intentional Morning Routine

I’m serious when I say I’m not a morning person so when I’m telling you that you can train yourself to be productive in the morning, I mean it.

It’s all about figuring out how to rewire your body to function in the morning. Over time, you will get used to it and the process will become easier.

The reason that creating a healthy routine is so important, is because we are creatures of habit. It is in widespread agreement that successful people are often the ones with grit.

They are the people that just keep going no matter what. On days where they don’t want to do something, they do it anyways. Getting yourself into the habit of doing the right things every morning will empower you and set your day up for success.

Days add up to weeks. Weeks add up to months, and suddenly your life will begin to change. It’s all about baby steps.

My Perfect Morning Routine

Everyone’s priorities will vary, but I have always found it helpful to listen to what other people have found success in, so I am going to tell you what my perfect morning routine looks like.

I would highly recommend buying the Ultimate Productivity Bundle if you are serious about getting into a productive lifestyle. It is an amazing collection of resources that come from many different viewpoints, at an incredible price. I have no doubts that you will find a system that works for you if mine isn’t quite right. My priorities are my family and my business, but I have to keep my home in running order or I get overwhelmed and completely fall apart.

When I follow this routine like I’m supposed to, my day runs so smoothly it is incredible. I find myself with hours of family time and project time in the afternoons. It has become a real game changer for us!

Before we get started, I also want to talk planners. This post is all about how I trained my not-a-planner-fan self into using a schedule, and this one is all about my favorite planning tool ever.

I highly recommend that you read these if you have struggled to use a planner in the past, or avoided it altogether. Having a gameplan is extremely important if you have a goal to reach but not a whole lot of time to spend on it!

Work Time

My alarm goes off at 6:45, and like a good girl, I roll right out of bed. (Tip number one, remember?)

After I turn my alarm off, I walk into the kitchen, grab my cold water bottle out of the fridge and drink as much as I can without feeling sick. This serves two purposes: That water is cold, so it helps invigorate me, and it gets my body to start working. It’s almost like a signal that says “Rest time is over!”.

Then I brush my teeth, brush my hair and put it into a bun, and change my clothes. Now that I’m somewhat presentable, I head outside for five minutes. I reflect on my daily list that I made when I planned my week. After I feel wide awake, I head in and wake Parker up for school.

Tip: The fridge or bathroom mirror(or both!) are great places to post your goals or daily affirmations! Read them every morning to help get yourself into the right mindset.

Prepare Ahead of Time

We set out an outfit during our bedtime routine, so Parker doesn’t need my help getting ready for about 20 minutes after I wake him up.

During this time, I make sure that my meal plan is in order. I make sure that my freezer meal is defrosted and that I have everything that we need for sides. This typically only takes a minute, so I’m often able to get a few things done.

Depending on how much time I have before it’s time to leave, I either complete a few tasks that are blog related or do my laundry. If you have a dishwasher(I’m jealous by the way!), unloading it should be priority number one. You can’t load as you go unless you start with an empty dishwasher, so set yourself up for success and get it done!

Once Parker is ready, we spend 15-20 minutes practicing his reading and spending time together. This is often our only one on one time so it is a no-phone timezone.

Not only has setting this time aside been so good for his progress, but I have also noticed a difference in his general behavior. We are getting complete connection and bonding during this time period and it is so enjoyable!

When it is time, we load up and I drop Parker off at school. I’m very blessed because I’m able to leave my little ones at home with their dad. By the end of this, it’s about 7:45.

As soon as I get home, I sit down and keep working on work stuff until about 9:30. My two youngest typically wake up at about 8. I feed them breakfast and they play quietly in their rooms. When they start paying attention to me, I know my work time is done that morning!

Even though it doesn’t seem like I got much work in, by that point I have already hit about an hour and a half of focused working time! That’s pretty darn productive if you ask me.

If you have yet to start your dream biz, you can also use this time to reach whatever your goals are. The point is that it is there, waiting to be used!

Family Time

At this point, I will play with my kids-sometimes together, sometimes one on one. We will get dressed and then play until they lose interest which is usually about an hour.

During that time we read, play with toys together, play games, and go outside.

Sometimes we run errands, and other times we head to the park. On days where I am feeling really worn out, we will relax and watch a movie, but more often than not we are busy. Wearing them out works in my favor when it comes to quiet time in the afternoon.

Once they lose interest, I grab them a snack and start taking care of my mundane tasks for the day.

I have three priorities when it comes to my mundane tasks. Dishes, laundry, and dinner. In order to keep everything running smoothly, these are the tasks that must be done every day. These are the bare minimum tasks that must be done in order to avoid needing a catch-up day or getting overwhelmed and discouraged.

I move onto whatever I feel needs my attention most after I complete the three master tasks. Sometimes it’s a deep clean, sometimes it’s a project around the house, and other days it is budgeting or meal planning. This part of my day is flexible, but it is a time to be in motion. I keep this up until lunch-time!

Just Keep Going

It’s pretty incredible because before noon I have completed more than I do in an entire day when I don’t create a productive morning. I can tell you one thing: when I mess up my morning routine, I regret it every time.

I end up frazzled and frustrated and overwhelmed. I lose sight of the big picture. All of those little obstacles that I usually take care of first thing in the morning don’t get taken care of, and suddenly life feels really hard.

Just like you, I’m in a state of transition. I’m still just figuring all of this out. I don’t have all of the answers, but I’m a real mom that’s living in the trenches and this is what has worked for me.

Set some goals, set your alarm, and get to work because your life is in your hands! Don’t miss out on it because you are tired. You hold the key to everything that you have ever wanted if you just decide to go for it.

Don’t forget to check out the Ultimate Productivity Bundle in order to create your own perfect morning routine. There are some incredible resources in there, including a course on how to use Trello, which has completely changed the way that my days go! Check out the bundle here.
